Mosquito Repellent Activity of Phytochemical Extracts From Peels of Citrus Fruit Species
ثبت نشده
چکیده
The mosquito repellent activity of phytochemical extracts from Peels of five citrus fruit species, Citrus sinensis, Citrus limonum,Citrus aurantifolia, Citrus reticulata and Citrus vitis, was investigated. The volatile phytochemical extracts were obtained from processed air-dried and powdered citrus fruit peels by Soxchlet extraction using Diethyl Ether as solvent. Five different concentrations, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25% (volume by volume) were prepared from each extract stock. Topical application of the extract concentrations on human volunteers revealed that 20% and 25% repelled mosquitoes 2 hours and 5 hours, respectively. Short-lived and mild skin itching and sneezing reactions were observed as side effects. This study has shown that phytochemical extracts from species of citrus fruit have good promise for topical repellence against mosquitoes generally. Effiom, O. E. Avoaja & D. A , Ohaeri, C. In Vitro Studies on Phytochemical Content, Antioxidant, Anticancer, Immunomodulatory, and Antigenotoxic Activities of Lemon, Grapefruit, and Mandarin Citrus Peels.
BACKGROUND In recent years, there has been considerable research on recycling of agroindustrial waste for production of bioactive compounds. The food processing industry produces large amounts of citrus peels that may be an inexpensive source of useful agents. OBJECTIVE The present work aimed to explore the phytochemical content, antioxidant, anticancer, antiproliferation, and antigenotxic ac...
متن کاملEvaluation of the antioxidant activity of extracts from some fruit peels
The growing interest on the replacement of synthetic antioxidants with natural ones has directed many research toward the plant-derived raw materials. The special attention is focused on inexpensive or residual sources from food agricultural industries. Fruit peels are valuable wastes obtained from domestic and industrial sources. The potential of fruit wastes as sources of natural antioxidants...

Peels and edible pulp from three species of citrus including Citrus aurantifolia (varieties pica and sutil) and Citrus x lemon var. Genova widely cultivated and consumed in Northern Chile (I and II region) were analyzed for phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity for the first time. A high performance electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HPLC-UV-ESI-MS) method was developed for the ra...

This study was designed to examine for the first time the antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of essential oils and organic extracts of Tunisian Citrus aurantium. Essential oils extracted by hydrodistillation from the peels, leaves and flowers were characterized by GC–MS. It results in the identification of three chemotypes: limonene (87,02 %), linalyl acetate (53,76 %) and linalool (39,74...
متن کاملMicroencapsulation of Citrus grandis peel oil using interfacial precipitation chemistry technique for repellent application
Essential oil of Citrus family plant is known to have repellent effect against mosquito. Unfortunately, due to its high volatility effect, its repellency effect was compromised. The incorporation of essential oil in a microencapsulation formulation has been shown to help improve the stability and potency of the repellent. In this study, Citrus grandis peel oil (CGPO) was encapsulated by using t...
